Anyone ever seen a tire do this?

This was my front right tire! Wow? Coming home from the beach and the front end stared to vibrate, pulled over and looked didn't really see anything (it didn't look as bad with the weight of the car on it). The tire guy said it was the steel belts separating, possibly from sitting for long periods of time. The car came from up north and the PO said they always stored it every winter. He also said the date stamped on the tires was 4/98.

I couldn't believe that tire came off my car.

Anyway, I got 5 new BFGs yesterday and it drives as smooth as a video game now.

Re: Anyone ever seen a tire do this?

I had a similar thing happen a couple of years ago. I was also coming home from the beach and my front end was shaking. The next day I noticed a knot on my tire almost the size of a baseball.

Re: Anyone ever seen a tire do this?

I have seen it plenty of times. I was in the tire & auto game until 1998. The tire guy was correct. The belts separated. You are lucky it did not blow out.

On a tire that is 8 years old the tire could have been dry-rotting in that area. On numerous occasions a belt will separate where the tire could have been patched or plugged (repaired). This are could have been penetrated by an object like a nail or screw and caused the bets to shift ever so slightly. With wear and tear that are becomes worse over the years and eventually separates.

BFG's are good tires. But at about 7 or 8 years that will happen to them. I've seen it happen at 5 years. Today many tire manufacturer's recommend replacing tires that are more than 5 years old regardless of tread because of possible dry-rot. They are of course referring to cars produced in 2001. But muscle car owners should also have their tires inspected annually by a professional.

Thank God you and your car are ok.

Re: Anyone ever seen a tire do this?

On my way home from Dallas a couple years ago this Cooper tire came apart on my truck at about 80-85 mph...on the front drivers side! Needless to say it was a handful to keep from rolling. Im lucky noone was next to me cuz I was definitely using up both lanes and then some to keep from flipping over Id never seen a passenger tire totally come apart like this...almost like a retread from a semi. By the time I got it stopped and looked at it, the tire was completely off the rim and was all wrapped around the control arms.

Re: Anyone ever seen a tire do this?

Only time I peeled tread off a regular tire (non retread like semi's) was when I got new rims and tires on my old hot rod 64 C10 chevy. I bought home the old tires and rims and did a few of those burnouts you always wished you could but dind't want to ruin the rim/tire deal. After a few minute long 3rd gear stand still burnout both tired started peeling off the tread like that.

Re: Anyone ever seen a tire do this?

Aahhh the Firestone 721. I remember those commercials as a kid....7 around 2 around 1. The 721.....Too bad the tire turned out to be junk like some other Firestone's have been....I think the 721 led to Firestone's downful and being purchased by Bridgestone in 1988.

The 15" Radial ATX was another junk and led to more issues for them.

Uniroyal also had issues. I have seen tread peel off their Tiger Paw Plus tires used in the mid to late 1980's. I called it orange peeled. It looked like someone had peeled an orange.

FWIW, Uniroyal/Goodrich were bought by Michelin in 1984. Michelin's have the flimsiest sidewall known to man. That's why they went on Lincoln's & Caddy's in the early 1990's when whitewalls were still around.

CDJr,

I believe you are 100% correct. Wasn't that like 25 years ago or maybe it was 22 years ago? I know it was the early 1980's. Even though I was too young to drive yet, I thought it was a cool commercial at that time.

Re: Anyone ever seen a tire do this?

Consider yourself lucky Xfactor! I run many cars and heavy trucks in a fleet and have a seperation about two or three times a year. In many of the cases the tire does a lot of damage to the fender.
