Cool 17" rims. Whats the widest tire & Wheel i can use?

What is the widest rim and tire combo I can use on my 1969 camaro. I would like to use 9.5" in the back an 8" in the front. What is the BS I will need on both? What tire combo will work best with these wheels?
Thanks

Re: 17" rims. Whats the widest tire & Wheel i can use?

You can go up to a 275x40x17 on the rear with the 9.5" wide wheel. I've heard of guys using between 5.5-5.75" bs. Just make sure you measure both wheel wells as they are rarely square. I'm in the process right now of fitting my car with 18's. As for the front, there are a few factors that come into play. Stock suspension, drop spindles, etc. These will effect the bs and the size wheel you can put on there. Hope this helps.

I run
Front: 17x8 (4.75" backspacing) - 5x4.75 pattern (American Racing 505-7863)
Back: 17x9.5 (5.5" backspacing) - 5x4.75 pattern (American Racing TT2 custom)
They fit perfectly center in the rear wheel wells, fronts fit perfect as well.

The front end is dropped will this affect the tire & rim size in the front. I used drop springs.
Thanks

Brian, just curious. Do the same measurements pertain to both 67 & 69 wheel openings? Not sure, if anything, was changed for these model years. Want to make sure wheels and tires will fit 67 also. Thanks

Re: 17" rims. Whats the widest tire & Wheel i can use?

Fronts will be the same, the rear of a 67/68 is slightly narrower (because of the quarter panel design I believe) and thus everyone who has a 67/68 usually gets the 255/45R17 for the rear instead of the 275/40R17 like the 69 owners can get away with. Same backspacing if running same width, most who get a 255/45R17 though will also get the 8" rear (BS 4.75") or 8.5" rear (BS 5") since it fits the 255 series better and looks right (lip of rim is tucked in and protected by tire sidewall.

Re: 17" rims. Whats the widest tire & Wheel i can use?

I have 225/45R17's on 17x7 4" bs up front
and 275/40R17's on 17x8 4.5' bs out back.
And There is lots of room left on the front and rear. More so on the inside with more backspacing and larger rims. My car is also dropped 2" in the front, and only about an inch in the rear.

Re: 17" rims. Whats the widest tire & Wheel i can use?

I honestly believe that a 295 and maybe even a 305/45-17 will fit a '67/'68 car with the correct b/s b/c the lower shock mount will tuck up inside the rim..

Might have to put coil-overs to keep her frrom dropping down on them, but I don't think that you will need to use them to raise her so that this will fit tho!!

My old L-60/14's measured a modern 298/53-14 on 9" wide rims and would have fit fine except I had to run a 3.5" b/s rim b/c of the lower shock mount being in the way so therefore I ran coil-overs to keep her raised up..

These were like 1.25" to 1.5" away from the wall b/c of the shock mount the last time I looked if I am remembering right??
