Question Need rim backspacing and size help?

For my 1969 Camaro I was set on using a front 18x8 w/ 4.75"BS and rear 18x9.5 w/ 5.5"BS. Now I am not sure? Do I need to change the front rim backspacing if I have Powe Disc brakes already? If I have drum brakes in the back now but want to change the rear to power disc brakes will that change the backspacing I need to have on the rear? Also If I use a 18x9 rim in the rear instead of a 18x9.5 should I use a diferent backspacing? Thanks for the help

What you picked is just about what everyone is using on a '69. The fronts you should be fine in the rear if you are worried that the disc brake kit you pick is going to push the wheels out further call the company of the brake kit you plan to use and ask if it changes the track width. If it does it's usually not more than a 1/4". If so order the rear wheels with 5.75" backspace. In the mean time you can run a thin spacer if need be. In most cases a 1/4" doesn't matter all that much. If you go with a 9" wide rear wheel you can stick with a 5.5" backspace or go with 5 3/8" backspace. Just make sure you check your car 1st - make sure you have the same amount of room on both sides and you check all your mounts and bushings as these things will effect tire clearence.

These are the exact size and bs I am using. For the most part it is a good fit. The left front tire is rubbing on the subframe when turning to full lock. But I am running 245x40x18's on the front which are pretty big. I corrected the problem by drilling and tapping the LCA stop and put a bolt in there and it works well now.

I am currently swapping my rear drums to discs. I spoke to wilwood and Frank at the GP Superstore and they said the kit I need for my car should not push the wheels out but if it did it would only be about 3/16". That's not much at all. If I had to do it all over I think I would go with 5.75 bs on the rear just to make up the difference. Either way I should be o.k.

However, what works on my car may not work on your car. That's because my car is not square. Just to give you an idea, my left rear drum measures 1/2" further from the inner wheel well than the right rear well. The same goes for my front. The right front disc is 1/2" closer to the fender than the left. So as you can see my car is not square. But as JV69 said measure all four wheel wells just to be sure.

I ordered my wheels from Shawn at Newstalgia wheel. They were a great company to deal with and I got my wheels in approximately 3 weeks when they told me closer to 6 weeks. I got the Billet Specialties Qualifers and the look great. Can't wait til spring to put the new shoes on.

Do you have pictures of your car? I am thinking of getting the BS Fast Lane wheels and would love to see that stance of your car?

No photos yet as the car is at the shop getting an exhaust, alignment and a dyno tune. Then off to the body shop for a lot of welding and painting. Hope to have it back by April. I will be taking plenty of photos then.

I went to a few shows with a notepad and tape, found 69's with low profile setups, and recorded actual measurements just to be sure. All owners were more than happy to cooperate...

Bruce can you share some of your findings with us? I have a 69 with 1" lowering Eibachs up front and 3 leaf mono replacements on the rear. Thanks.
