17" Backspacing on a 68?

I am about to order wheels for my 68. I am going with American Racing Torque Thrust Classics CL205's. 17x7 and 17x8's. I have searched past threads only to become more confused. Will a 4" backspacing on front and 4.5" on the back be sufficient? Stock suspension with the LS1 disc brake conversion on both front and rear being the only alteration. Please help!

Re: 17" Backspacing on a 68?

on your (or at least my) 68, 7" w/4" on the front is perfect, a little more might work and allow a wider tire.

In back, I have 8" w/4.5", another 1/2 of bs would fit with my 255 tires, but nothing rubs the way they are. 8" w/4 1/2" bs and a 275 tire would rub on the inside.

Re: 17" Backspacing on a 68?

I have 225/45R17 BFG's on 17x7 with 4" bs up front
and 275/40R17 MT DR's on 17x8 with 4.5" bs out back.
And There is lots of room left on the front and rear. More so on the inside with more backspacing and larger rims. My car is also dropped 2" in the front, and only about an inch in the rear. This picture was taken before I dropped the rear down. A little bore bs in the rear would allow a wider tire but I have @ 3/4" to the outer fender lip.

Re: 17" Backspacing on a 68?

I have the exact setup you're talking about. I got feedback from JimM above as well as Newstalgiawheels.

Fronts are 17x7, 4" BS on 235/45's. Rears are 17x8, 4.5" BS on 255/45's. No rubbing at all.

Here's a pic:

Re: 17" Backspacing on a 68?

Thanks for all of the help guys. I ordered the wheels from Fast Lane Speed and Rod Shop yesterday. They were by far the cheapest and Jack is a great guy. $999 including lugs, stems, and shipping! They did advise that American wheels will be increasing their prices next week so if anyone is holding out on an American wheel purchase, you may want to go ahead and order them. Somewhere between $100 - $200 increase for the wheels I just ordered. Pretty substantial increase. Thanks again.
