68 Camaro rear wheel and tire question.

Looking to upgrade to some MT ET streets on my current setup. I now have 8" wheels with 275/60/15 on the back with no problems. Would like to go to a 15" x 10" wheel and was wondering what is the biggest tire that can fit on the back without rubbing or having to cut it up to fit. I'm no expert on measuring back spacing, but was wondering if a 295 or even 315 would fit back there. If so, any idea on the back spacing I would need? Thanks

Your best bet is a 15x10 with a 5.5" backspace, and maybe that 295 will work out okay.

Re: 68 Camaro rear wheel and tire question.

I'm running 15x8's w/ 4.5" bs and 285/60/15 SH (sh=short) McCreay's and they rub on off camber bumps (driveways/speed bumps).
I don't see a wider tire fitting due to the sidewall bulge. If you use a 5.5"bs wheel then the sidewalls need to be flat. If I measure from the wheel mounting surface to the inner wheel well I get 6"(using straight edge).

Re: 68 Camaro rear wheel and tire question.

What about a 15 x 8 with 4" backspace for the 295/50/15?

4"bs will stick out and hit the lip, maybe.
If you go with a 8.5-9" wheel it may work depending on tire bulge and 4.5-4.75 bs.
What I did to see what would fit was get all my measurments and put on cardboard,cut it out,and test fit at all angles.

Re: 68 Camaro rear wheel and tire question.

Thanks for the replies. I have 275/60/15 on there right now and for some reason I have plenty of clearance all aound the wheel well and about 1" or more from the shock as it is now and very rarely rubs. The 295/50/15 are actually a little smaller in diameter I think than the 275/60/15 so I'm thinking that I should be ok. If the tires stick out a little more that is ok with me as long as it is not too far.

Re: 68 Camaro rear wheel and tire question.

11.6 w x 26.6 t --> 295/50/15
10.8 w x 28 t ---> 275/60/15

Both are approx. due to Mfg. variances. Looks like it should work.

Re: 68 Camaro rear wheel and tire question.

Here is pics of the new 295/50/15 on my 8" Ralleye wheels with 4" bs. They fit without ANY mods and I have 1 1/2" from the inner tire well and plenty of room around the wheel well, plus they don't stick out that far at all! I think they look awesome. Now I am half tempted to put even fatter meats under there!
