Which heads for my 305

I'm building a cheap 305. I have several early castings and some late model centerbolt ones. Which ones should I use to get the most power from this junk? It is going in a truck.

Re: Which heads for my 305

Pretty soon, PDQ67 will chime in and tell you how the -601 heads are great little heads for small motors....

From what I've read, -601 heads from an early 305 HO are probably the best, followed closely by the -416 heads. Both should be 1.84" int, 1.5" exh valve heads with tight combustion chambers and pretty good flow. Both are also early (perimeter bolt) heads. The --601's have a bit better combustion chamber (and also smaller), but the 416's should be good as well. There's also a similar style centerbolt head (i.e. 305 HO centerbolt, similar to the 416) but I can't seem to find the casting info -- I think they're the 081 castings, but not sure.

Re: Which heads for my 305

From my experience, the 081 castings (centerbolt) are cleaner and better cast than the 416s. Haven't played with 601s...(are they the Vortec version for 305s?). L98 aluminum heads work well on a 305, too.

Do spend some time at least bowl blending them...makes a big difference.

Don't wait for conditions to be perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.
