Timing Chain Cover

Just a quick question. Anyone out there purchase a timing chain cover for a SBC that will handle a double roller chain ???? if so where did you get one.
Also on that same note is there any clearance problems for the Water Pump ???. I am building a 350 for my 67 and I am trying to match pulley's and brackets depending on which Pump I use,,Long vs Short.

Thanks in advance
Joe

Thumbs up Re: Timing Chain Cover

Pretty much any of the Chevy covers and most aftermarket covers from brand name suppliers will clear double rollers. The double rollers are really not much wider than the earlier, pre-67, GM 'wide' type timing chains.
I commonly use the GM truck set-up or a Cloyes set and have only run into rubbing a couple times, usually it was with some cheap chrome cover someone suppied with their engine dress-up parts.
The problem is really not usually the clearance in the front of the chain, it's the clearance in the rear around the Oil Galley taps.
Some chain sets require some slight clearancing (grinding) around the raised portion of these cast galley boss to provide clearance for the chain links.
Be sure to mock-up the assembly and load (push ) the gear/chain assembly towards the back of the block while rotating to see if it is going to make contact - I put a piece of masking tape over the top of the boss and then rotate the assembly and see if there are any marks on the tape - grind for clearance and check again ...

If you use a post 68 long style water pump it will give you an additional 1/4~1/2" of clearance to the cover.

If you are using a cover with the cam button on it, be sure you carefully check the button clearance to the gear contact - most tend to set these with a pre-load or pressure on them - they should not have pressure on them at normal operating load.
