302 for sale - true or not?

On a Dutch site someone is selling what is supposed to be a 69 302 engine. Is there any way of telling it is or isn't by this picture? The only number mentioned is the casting number 3970010. I emailed him for more numbers but no response yet. It would be an extremely rare engine around here...

Timing cover tab looks too close to crankshaft.

Thumbs up Re: 302 for sale - true or not?

You are going to have to look at the Suffix on the block, if it's still there, and compare the components and dates to be sure it is wahat he says.
The timing cover tab is for an 8" damper - but, it has a bolted on tab, Z's were welded. The cover could have been removed/replaced for some reason like changing the timing chain or during a rebuild - hard to tell.
The block is a Flint casting, so that is correct for a DZ.
The heads are the HP '186 'type' that would be used on a '69 DZ.
Those look to be the correct, non-polished, Z valve covers - hard to tell.
The pulleys in the lifter galleys also look to be deep-groove type, may be original to engine.

I think checking the data on the front pad, checking for a partial VIN on the pad or down by the oil filter on the bellhousing flange and/or pulling a valve cover to check head casting number and date would help pin it down a little without causing the seller a lot of trouble to confirm it.

Hope it turns out to be something you can use;
John

Re: 302 for sale - true or not?

ask him for the #'s off the pulleys (sitting in the lifter valley), from what I see they don't look like deep groove (if they were that would be a +)
