new rings

I noticed lately that my engine spits out a bit of smoke when hard on the gas, which probably means it might be time to replace the rings. Is this something that is very complex? Does it involve a complete rebuild?
Thanks

Re: new rings

Valve stem seals are faulty rather than rings. But, if you do the seals on the cylinder head(s), might as will do the block overhaul also.

You could get by with an upper end rebuild. Remove the heads, have them reworked, or find a comparable deal with new heads and replace the heads.

Whichever route you take, clean the piston tops, smooth the block deck, the surface the head(s) set on, change engine oil & filter, antifreeze, thermostat, new hoses, new radiator cap, new belts, new tune-up kit, rebuild carb, and have cleaned or replace the radiator.

Then next year or two, remove the engine, and have the block rebuilt and replace the clutch, if manual.

It's your choice and the Snowball Effect does get bigger by leaps & bounds.

Re: new rings

Valve stem seals typically leak the most under very high vacaum. If you bring it up to 4000 rpm (under load) then take your foot off the gas, bad valve seals will smoke like a son of a gun.

Rings typically leak more under acceleration.

You can change the valve seals easily with the heads on and the motor together, so it's worth a shot. They make a tool that attaches to the rocker stud and compresses the valve springs so you can get them off. Do a search, lotsa info here on that.

Probably your best bet first would be to do a compression or leakdown test. Bad valve seals won't affect these, but rings or valves will.

It's certainly practical toar her down, do a quick hone, change the rings and maybe bearings, have the heads done, and put her back together, but you need to be prepared for more than that before you start, you don't know what you'll find til you're in there checking stuff... cylinder taper would require a rebore and new pistons, bearing wear could require having the crank turned, etc etc. It can snowball on you in a hurry!
