Big block choices, help

Hey, just need to pick some brains of the guys that have been through this before.

I've been poking around the list and search function trying to get some ideas and you guys seem to have it all together!

I just picked up a 73 454 out of a vette.

Its got the standard Q'jet, 049 heads with about 66K miles.

Looking to move it up to the 425-500 hp level coupled to the TH400 for street use on pump gas.

Not looking for a NOS set up or anything that extreme.

I'm certainly new to the BBC scene. Haven't opened it up yet but trying to put a plan together

Any suggestions on what to do with the heads, ie bigger valcves worth it or bowl work, piston changes, manifold and carb or efi. Not trying to get into aluminium heads route or hugh $ but rather 60-70 muscle ideas.

Trying to learn the tried and true from you guys with the experience.

Thanks Dick

If its all there and in good condition coded for a Vette put it on ebay and buy a 502 crate with the money.

Numbers matching (date code correct) complete '73 454 would probably get you a ZZ502, or close to it. That will give you rock solid 500 horse and more torque than you will know what to do with it.

I also have an early 454 (468) with ported and polished 049's. Just got it done and it cost me some decent money to rebuild. I agree with everyone else. If you can sell it and get $ to pick up a crate your better off in the long run.. If the motor doesnt mean that much to you the way it is , let it go...it worth more to the someone else looking for that exact stock motor on ebay.

Re: Big block choices, help

That advice can even go one step farther.......The guy that buys that motor for his Vette needs to put it in, and sell the car. They stopped making Vette's after '72 just like the Camaro after '73. Who wants a plastic bumper up front and a chrome one in the back????

Okay, I'll shut up now!!!!!

Re: Big block choices, help

In 73, a 454 Vette had more HP and torque than any Vette in 72. Plus it had cowl induction and rear chrome bumpers with a good-lookin' urethane front. 73 Vettes are plenty cool!

Re: Big block choices, help

damn....you must own one. They look like star trek meets American Graffiti.........LOL

I'm not going to check your facts. It would be odd that a '73 would have the most HP and torque since that was when the gas guzzler problem hit. Leave it to Chevy though. They'er still ugly. It's like Mopar. All kinds of power and butt UUUUGGGLLLYYYY!!

Easy on me straight line.....I'm just have en fun with ya!
