oil volume question

Generally speaking, during the operation of a 350 engine, how much oil is actually in circulation in the engine. In other words, while the engine is running, how much is in the pan and how much is up in the engine. Let's say at idle and at a higher rpm like 3500. thanks, Kevin

Re: oil volume question

It's a balancing act Kevin and it depends on the engine and how it's assembled and the parts used. I have seen a small block run fine on 3 quarts of oil instead of 5 with steady oil pressure at all rpms. Then I have seen an engine with a high volume oil pump suck the pan dry at 3500 rpm with 5 qts in it.

Re: oil volume question

it depends a lot on bearing clearances, too. Loose bearings flow more oil.
