Angry puzzled HEI

I have a 350 sbc with a HEI ignition, New cap, rotor, module,ho coil yesterday, new wires and plugs a few months ago. Good strong battery pulled #1 out to check for spark and it is so weak that the motor wont even fire using starting fluid. What gives? I'm at a loss here? any help would be great before I set the whole mess on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: puzzled HEI

Is the little ground strap on there at the coil?

Re: puzzled HEI

That and check if the rotor is on good. My boy got a rotor on once all wierd on his 3rd gen, it was cocky and funky looking, and ran like crap if it would start at all.

You do have the resister wire bypassed?

Re: puzzled HEI

Ground strap of coil gets attached to one of the coil mounting bolts.
Make sure the cap button is in place.
If HEI is installed an a '73 & earlier vehicle, a new ignition wire must be ran.
Easiest route is to run a new wire from the fusebox spade labelled IGN and coil up or shrink sleeve the end of the wire by the coil. Use a min 12 AWG.
Other route is to replace the resistor wire, the one with a sock, at the firewall connector. Cut all but an inch off next to the connector and solder in a new wire. Use a min 12 AWG.

Re: puzzled HEI

actually its in a 1983 s-10. the coil ground strap is bolted down along with the coil and the little spring and button is in nicely and touching were it should be.

Re: puzzled HEI

Measure BAT voltage at the connector during cranking. The measured voltage should be within 0.5 volts of starting voltage measured at the battery posts, i.e., 11 volts during cranking at battery, 10.5 volts at BAT connector.

Plug gap at 0.040"?
Bad plug wire?
Bad spark plug?

If you have an aftermarket coil, its primary winding impedance may be too high for the stock OE module resulting in more current drawn through the module and module cannot handle the extra current.

Re: puzzled HEI

Just as a test run a hotwire straight from the batt + to the dist.

If you don't have an OEM plug-in for the + at the dist, I have found when you use a female crimp-on wire connector sometimes it is hard to tell if you are on the spade or not. A mirror helps here.

Got another coil you can try?

Re: puzzled HEI

ill regap the plugs, go back to the stock coil and run a direct lead from the battery tomorrow and see what works. this is getting very frustrating chasing something that seems so simple

Re: puzzled HEI

so i went out today and changed the plugs regaped to .040 changed the wires, went back to the stock coil and ran a direct lead to the hot on the dist. also checked all my other plugs and grounds for tightness. GUESS WHAT still a tiny spark and it wont even attempt to start. so i say burn it down!

Re: puzzled HEI

Maybe a bad new module? Did it run before you chaged everything?

Re: puzzled HEI

Be sure that the motor has a good ground.

I chased my tail on that one when I re-built my motor last winter. Cranked great but wouldn't fire. Cleaned the ground strap and fired right up
