2 questions, Vortec guides, springs etc..

1) Would stock vortec head springs work with a ROLLER cam?
2) How much would it cost (est) to get the guides cut to accept a larger lift cam?

Just wondering if I should buy Vortec heads bare and buy valves and matching springs for my cam and have machine shop perform valve job and other work VS buy them new assembled then have the guides cut? Trying to save money$

Re: 2 questions, Vortec guides, springs etc..

How big of a roller cam are you looking at? A mild street roller under .480" inch lift should be no problem. You can buy the guide cutter and arbor from comp cams...I think I gave $40 for mine. No need to get new valves, but stock vortec springs are pretty weak, so you will most likely need to change them.

Re: 2 questions, Vortec guides, springs etc..

Buy the dual cutter and open up spring pockets at the same time you mill the guide bosses for positive seal and guide height. Surely thats worth the price of a cutter. I know have cutters up to 1.625 that do this. This way you can get the correct springs for your roller cam.

Re: 2 questions, Vortec guides, springs etc..

Patric,
By the time you buy the heads, spend the money to have them machined, etc etc, you could probably buy a set of aftermarket heads for just slightly more and get a much better head. I personally think that the GM vortec heads are way over rated. Yes they flow good and make power but ... have you actually looked at a set to see how thin the deck surface is ? Scary if you ask me. Same with the intake mounting surface, it is hardly thick enough for about three threads of a bolt unless you use the vortec type manifold. I think the vortecs are about $600 a pair assembled, for just a little bit more you can almost get an aluminum head.

Just my opinion,

This has crossed my mind many times. The cheapest that I can get them assembled and upgraded is around $680(ScogginDickey).
Bill,(or anyone else) what other head would you recommend for a daily driven 400ci truck engine with a zz4 cam, stock dished pistons and perf rpm intake? I have everything except the heads. I was not wanting to spend over $700.

Re: 2 questions, Vortec guides, springs etc..

to answer the original question with an original answer that, surprisingly, no one brought up- the vortec heads came installed in trucks with roller cams, so, yes they will work with small roller cams..
as for the "thin" intake mounting surface- just use the proper vortec intake manifold (you know- so it actually seals the roof of the port instead of leaving 8 HUGE vacuum leaks) and that problem is solved.

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

Thanks Derrik, now if I get the vortec's I'll keep the springs. This will cut down on costs, and I like saving money!

Stock Vortec springs wont work with a .510 lift cam..480 is usually max on Vortecs due to retainer to valve guide clearance.

Yea and if I get used heads the springs will probably be weak and need to be replaced any way. thanks Chad
