Re: Maximum Horse power SBC/BBC?

Ok got a question. I have a sbc 350 and am looking for some more power without sacrificing mpg and putting in a new cam. Been thinking about getting some aluminum heads. I have stock iron heads, 1.6 roller rockers, headers, msd ignition, weind aluminum intake, holley 600cfm carb. And my car is a daily driver. Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Maximum Horse power SBC/BBC?

SBC will make about 1.5 horse per cube with a max displacement of 454 yeilds about 675 horse max power (people who build 700 horse SBC's use aftermarket blocks for a reason).

The BBC will make on average 1.2 horse per cube but the biggest big block can be 630 cubes with out breaking the bank (a 700 horse SBC will excead the price of a 700 horse BBC by quite a bit) so we are looking at an easy 760 horse. The stock BBC block will support 1,200 to 1,500 horse (because I know of dozens doing just that in blown alcohol classes). Most big inch race gas big blocks average over a thousand horse (540 - 555 - 572's)

Re: Maximum Horse power SBC/BBC?

I guess I didn't know that I can build 540's, 555's and 572's out of stock 454 blocks?

Oooop's forgot about stock 502 blocks.. But aren't they weaker yet??

I figure 700 hp will probably split a stock SB block right in half down the "V" over time.

Don't know how much hp a stock 454 block can take, sorry..
