Question Back of engine bellhousing bolt number ?

on the back of some 69 year model engines, where the tranny bolts to the back of the block, why is there only 6 bolt holes vs. 7 on others.
are the engines with 7 bolt holes ,4 bolt main motors?and the ones with 6 bolt holes 2 bolt mains?
hope this makes sense........

Re: Back of engine bellhousing bolt number ?

I have no idea why some blocks are drilled for 6 bolts and some for 7, but it definitely doesn't have anything to do with the block having 2 or 4 bolt mains.

Experience...... It's what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

My 68 327 block, casting number 3914678, has 7 bolt holes. It is absolutely a 2 bolt main block

Re: Back of engine bellhousing bolt number ?

thanks Jim you put the main capps ? to rest.
But it still leaves the ? as to why sometimes the top seventh hole is not tapped on some blocks and tapped on others.

Re: Back of engine bellhousing bolt number ?

i thought the top bellhousing bolt was only used on trucks and other large vehicles. most th350's and 400's ive seen dont have the top bolt hole but ive seen a few truck th400's that had the top bolt hole, hope that helps.

Re: Back of engine bellhousing bolt number ?

My 1970 CE block has 7 but in many stock bellhousings like the 621, don't have the hole for this. My Lakewood did.
