Rocker arms....tick, tick, tick !

Did I read that a leaky exhaust manifold sometimes sounds exactly like a ticking rocker arm?

I am about at my wits end adjusting these comp magnum roller tip rockers.

It's on a HE260h...flat tappet.

tick...tick....tick....just venting ! I'll get it eventually.

A leaky manifold could be diagnosed by disconnecting the plug wire and if leaky, tick will go away or change tone.

Use screwdriver or hose to ear on top of valve cover to find the rocker making noise.
Is noisy rocker getting plenty of oil? Oil quiets the tick.
Lifter weak as in losing its pumped condition?
Pour alittle ATF down carb air horn to see smoke from leak in manifold?
Valve cover out of harm's way from being hit by rocker arm?

Thanks Everett...I never thought about the spark plug changing the sound of a possible leak. I will check that.

Other things to check would be the retainer to rocker clearance, look for shiny spots on the retainer.

Also, depending on the valve covers, there can be a "right way" and a backwards. If I put the repro Z.28 finned covers on upside down (?backwards? you know, so the crossed flaggs decal is upside down) the rocker tips will hit them.

I remember hearing a "tick tick tick" noise before, turned out to be the pcv valve. Try pulling it out and see if it goes away?
