wobbling power steering pulley

guys,

ive got a brand new zoops power steering pulley and a brand new power steering pump. both are the keyed kind. well, i put the pulley on and tighten the nut down and viola... the pulley wobbles as i spin it around by hand.

the guy at kragen told me this is normal. come on man... if it wobbles at hand-turning speed, whats it gonna do at 7000 rpm?

this isnt normal, right?

is the pulley bent? any way to check it? seems flat when i put it on a table.

is it installed crooked?????????

any ideas?
thanks

jeff

Re: wobbling power steering pulley

I had the same exact thing happen. with the same parts. I back the nut off a bit, it runs true, tighten it up, and it goes to wobblen. I was told the same thing. The only way I could fix what I had was to get a locking nut. I tighten it snug with a 1/4 turn more. Its been going 6500 to 7000 for almost a year now. Straight as a arrow.

put a long shaft into the pulley and use a square to see if the hub is straight on the pulley or not. (90 degrees - perpindicular...)

Re: wobbling power steering pulley

ill have to go get a shaft that fits the pulley.

but as far as the locking nut idea, i dont get it. no matter where i put the pulley on the shaft (and how tight the nut) it wobbles.

i think the fact that it lays flat on the table doesnt mean that it wobbles... think that the hub has to be concentric to the pulley and if not, then it wobbles.

i think something musta happened to this pulley at some point. i just opened it, but ihave had it for almost 8 months.

Re: wobbling power steering pulley

The PS shaft is tapered. Remove the key and install the pulley and tighten, check for straightness.

Key may be too thick/high.
