Headman Headers 65003

I'm getting to the point that I need to buy new headers. I'm looking at the Headman 65003 1 3/4 hearders for my 69 Camaro with a 408 SBC. Does anyone know if these will clear the power steering gear box?

Also Jet Hot has them listed at $463.00 for sterling coated. Is this a good price?

If anyone has any pictures of these installed could you post them up.....please!

Thanks for the help!

Re: Headman Headers 65003

Well I tried calling headman today, but no one answered. Probably closed because it's good friday. I did however look at there web page and it say's the 65003 fits with power steering. I can live with dimpling the pipe to clear the gear box, if that is all I have to do.

Also will the headers fit with straight plugs?

Re: Headman Headers 65003

I had the 65003's on my 408 sbc 69. It has PS as well. Its a very tight fit but it did not rub. Maybe like a 1/16 or so clearence.

Re: Headman Headers 65003

I have them on my 67. Had to tweek the tube to get clearance for the PS box. I also have energy motor mounts which will change the clearences a little. Great clearance under the car but be very careful not to try to flex the header under the car as it will cause the weld to break where it is welded to the flange. Been there done that!

Which motor mounts are you running? I just purchased stock motor mounts, wonder if they will work.

Re: Headman Headers 65003

Had the 65003s on my 68 small block with manual steering and no clearance issues with the manual box. The idler arm will contact the right side header when turned to the limits. Other than that no issues. Can't help you on the jet coating, I order mine painted because I modify the primary tube flanges and refinish them and the coating would be destroyed in the process. I've always had good luck with VHT 1500 degree flame proof coating, that's what I'm using on the next set again next week.

Re: Headman Headers 65003

They wouldn't clear my third gen ps box, looks the same as 1st gen box to me. Also it looks like they crammed 1 3/4 tubes into a 1 5/8 flange. The tubes actually look crimped at the flange. Seemed to defeat the purpose of the larger tubes. I understand this to be the case on the current version, older versions didn't have this odd configuration. I now use them on my test stand then back in the attic when done.

Thumbs up Re: Headman Headers 65003

I have these headers installed in my small block car with all factory power steering equipment. It's close but they fit with no modifications. Good header for the price.

Re: Headman Headers 65003

Robert I'd heard they'd changed the primary inlet design, but if it's changed as much as you claim then maybe I'd better look at something other than the 65003. My last pair were the old design. Maybe I'd be better off keeping the 1 5/8 set that came with the car, at least they fit the port.

Re: Headman Headers 65003

Hear say on my part about the old design, I've never owned a previous set. If they had cleared my ps box I would have used them. Still I didn't think the port size matched the tubes.

Re: Headman Headers 65003

Here's a link where RickD had the same opinion of the ports. I bought my set with anticipation of needing a larger port but the ps box killed it anyway for me. I don't want to sound like I'm down on Headmans, just sharing my issues.

Re: Headman Headers 65003

Thanks again Robert for the link. It's pretty disappointing for me hearing others also claiming the 65003 current design is necked down. I guess I'll start looking at my other options. Glad I came across this post, I was getting ready to order on Monday.
