69 Z Damper

Hi Guys, went to time my Z yesterday and discovered that the timing mark at idle is off the scale and at about 12 o'clock. This is the first time I have had a light on it since aquiring it a couple of weeks ago. I guess I need to find TDC and see where the mark is. Is the mark in line with the crank keyway or does it depend on the damper?

Or I have one of those dampers that the outer ring slipped on.

Re: 69 Z Damper

Alan,

On page 46 of Macneish's book he shows a picture of the balancer and you can see the relationship between the mark and the key way. They are closer than I remember.

I hope this helps,

Re: 69 Z Damper

Anyone have a Z motor on an engine stand that can check? I looked at a couple of the parts places and in the pictures of the 302 damper, they show that the keyway lines up with one of the 3 spokes on the damper.

thanks guys

Re: 69 Z Damper

If you need to just get by, find tdc and mark your balancer, then tape it off with correct timing tape. Be done. Of course if you are afraid of the ring coming off totally, go for a new GM HiPo or factory stock.
