Lifters won't fit

This is really weird, can't get my lifters to fit. Even tried an old one just to see if it would fit, and it was too big also. Rebuilt several small blocks and don't remember ever having a problem getting new lifters to slip in. Any ideas?

Yes .842" are the STD Chev lifter Dia. I suspect your lifter bores are either very dirty or corroded. Use Laqcuer thinner on say a 12 gauge shot gun cleaner wad and spin it in the bores with a hand drill. Sometimes a Small Brake Hone will freshen up the Bores providing they are not too bad.

Re: Lifters won't fit

Jon,
How was your block cleaned ? We have found that when we shot blast them, even though it makes them look like new, it does "roll" over a little material at the tops of the lifter bores. We have a small dingle hone at the honing machine and run it a couple of strokes on every block we do, that solves the problem.

Re: Lifters won't fit

thanks for the input. block was cleaned at the machine shop, and I thought they just hot tanked it. engine sat in my garaage for about a year in an engine bag with oil on it, so it isn't corroded. got the lifters to go in by tapping them lightly with a small hammer, and then got them back out (rag and pliers) after degreeing the cam.

Re: Lifters won't fit

Sure hate to see lifter stick when running, as mentioned, a small brake hone or ball hone will clean this edge up. Sticking may even keep lifter from spinning, thus , burnt lobe.

Re: Lifters won't fit

I ALWAYS finger my lifter bores w/ oil and then spin each lifter in it's bore to make DARN sure they ALL spin!

And watch fingering them down in there b/c the bottom machine corners are sharp and will nick a finger in a heartbeat!

FOR SURE.

I've taken a chunk off my fingers and added some of my rare RH Negative to ensure the cam lobes get the best chance to survive that critical break in - LOL

That doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do.

Re: Lifters won't fit

You should NEVER have to use force to get 'em in the bores. Have the machine shop check the lifters and bores before you go any further - sounds like a disaster waiting to happen unless it's remedied now.
