383 Flywheel

I have a new 383 that is externally balanced. It also has a one piece rear seal. Is the flywheel for a one piece seal block different from a two piece? I thought they all used 400 flywheels if they are externally balanced.

Re: 383 Flywheel

They can be balanced for either ( I have seen and heard of both INT and EXT bal 383's) altho it makes no sense. Usually 383 are external and uses a 400 flywheel/flexplate and balancer.

Re: 383 Flywheel

The Centerforce part# for a 153 tooth flywheel is 700170. I have installed one on my project. It's a couple weeks away from fire up though. I can't give it a review at this time.

Re: 383 Flywheel

Thanks for the quick replies.

So is there a difference between the flywheels for 2 piece vs 1 piece? If so, how do you tell the difference?

Re: 383 Flywheel

They only fit the crank flange bolt pattern for their use!

Easy - the flywheel for a 2-piece seal engine will ONLY fit on the crank in a 2-piece-seal engine; the block, bolt pattern and crank flange on a 1-piece-seal engine is completely different, and all '86-up 1-piece flywheels are externally balanced, not neutral-balanced like 2-piece-seal flywheels. Photo below shows a 1-piece-seal setup.
