Mallory UniLite. Can I, shlould I?

Hey guys, I'm back with another question and I'll have plenty more in the future. Hope I haven't annoyed anyone yet.

Currently I have a Mallory UniLite distributor for my SB 350 along with an old *** Mallory Promaster classic coil. I'm wondering if I can throw a ignition box on there like an MSD 6AL-2 or a Mallory Hyfire and still use my optical Unilite?

If it can, should I get the box? Would I have to upgrade my coil? Should I sell the Unilite and go HEI?

I'm still planning the build, but I'm hoping to achieve somewhere between 500 and 550 hp NA when it's all said and done and I'd like my ignition system to be up to the task.

Yes, you could hook up a Mallory Hyfire such as the 6AL (#6853M) or even the Hyfire 6AL-2 (#6861M). This will be an easy hook up to the Unilite Distributor, just make sure you don't use the ballast resistor. Adding this type of ignition box will help smooth out the idle, increase throttle response while making the rpms climb faster, and since its digital, hitting the rev-limit will not be an earth shaking experience. Put the HEI in the vehicle when/if you sell it!

The Promaster is an excellent coil that will typically see many years of trouble free use. You can test the resistance of the coil to see how good of shape it is. Take an ohm meter and connect both positive and negative terminals, and you should read around 0.6ohms. Give or take 10% and the coil is still good!

Just my 2cents!

Just a couple of weekends ago my body became a perfect "ground" when I was bench testing a unilite with a hyfire IVc and the promaster coil. I successfully peed and pooped my pants! The hyfire IVc is a nice box but spendy.

Awesome!! So if I get a box I can eliminate the ballast? I like the sound of that. Also, the rev limiter and increased throttle response sounds like something I was wanting to do before I pulled the motor. Thanks.

Re: Mallory UniLite. Can I, shlould I?

I used to run a unilite and an MSD 6A box...then my Unilite optical craped out...so I upgraded to an MSD pro billet driven by an MSD 6AL...The reason I did was because it was 100 bucks for the optical part, and it was an old dist (with gear drive for a tach). New dist was like 175 and I already had a new 6AL sitting around...but I digress, yes you can run ign boxes and any coils with the unilite...worked great for me!
