Asking for opinions on best HP bang for $ on stock L48

I have a stock 1970 L48 300 hp engine that's been sitting for about 15 years I bought from a guy. Luckily it was stored well and prepped before storage. I pulled the heads and everything looks OK as far as I can tell. Thinks are clean and everything spins easy.
My question:

My first intent was to rebuild as stock mostly. I'm thinking of trying to do a few things not to radical and on a very tight budget to squeeze a little more HP out of it since I'm rebuilding anyway. What are my best options on where to spend a little extra money for the HP?

Thanks
Ray

Thumbs up Re: Asking for opinions on best HP bang for $ on stock L48

Sure! Like the birdie said, "Cheap, cheap, cheap"!!

Add no more than the cheap Summit 214/224 or their cheap 224/224 cam for like a "C"-note w/ new lifters and a cheap set of $25 to maybe by now $35 Z-28 valve springs and a cheap set of 1.625" dia., 4-tube, long headers! What are they nowadays?? $125/set??

The 214 cam for more grunt and the 224 cam for more topend hp is all here.

Nothing fancy at all and I bet it picks right up ON THE CHEAP!!!

He, He!! Old-school "shade-tree" all the way!!

It's an excellent starting point. I agree, a little more cam will do wonders. Personally I have no problems with the stock intake and carb for most street cars.

Thanks Guys

That's exactly the advice I was looking for, Cam, Lifters, Valve Springs and Headers. Sounds good.

Thanks
