327

I recently got a 68 Camaro Coupe. Some of my friends who are more engine savvy tell me that my 327 is a good engine. But could you tell me the positives and negative of having this size engine. (It has been rebuilt).

The only con you will have with a smaller ci motor is arguing with people on how it CAN run down big blocks.
I'd take a 327 over a 350 but a 383 or larger over a 327. just an opinion.

The only Mustang I'd ever own is a Fender.

We need more info, like what hp rating was it and what was it built back to and we will be glad to help.

It's not all that hard to get 400hp out of a decently stout 327.

And what is the tranny type, rearend gears and rear tire size?

I think that I can build a hopped up 331"/327" SB and install it in a Vega that will eat a Hemi just like Bill Jenkins did way back then!

At least I think it was a Vega??

And where's the 302" post w/ the dyno slip that showed 475hp+ that has been recently posted?

Guy's, I'm NOT saying cubic inch doesn't rule, but you put cubic money into a small engine and THEN install said cubic money built small engine in a light car, then look out big engines!!

If it's truly a 68 327 with 291 1.94 Heads. You can get an easy 425 HP at 7800 rpm. Acquire Grumpy Jenkins Small Block Hi-Performace Book.



If it's a cast crank Cross drill it. Install Manley 2.02/1.6 Pro flows with a Mechanical 296S Profile with TRW 11:1 Pistons 750DP on an Edlebrock Rpm and Blow Everybody Away - Been there did that - LOL

Don't forget that 327's sound so much better at high RPMs than bigger cube engines. Love that sound!

Back in the 80s, Car Craft did a Small Journal 327 build. The 327 was put on the dyno and it made 550 horsepower. I remember that Bow Tie Heads and a Crane Fireball Cam were used.
Try to find the article. It was in 1980, 1981 or 1982. Never underestimate the 327.

I agree. It takes more money to make the same hp with a in a smaller ci motor vs. a larger displacement engine. If you have a 400" motor and as we know most small blocks make 1hp per ci your going to have 400hp quite easily and cheap.
You can build a nasty 327 with 11:1, good cam, excellent heads... (double humps, bowties... after market aluminum...)
I put new heads, cam, intake ignition, headers on a rebuilt to stock 327/210hp rotating assy and it rips, I would guess it could do 12's.
Also if you do build a strong running 327 it wont be very street able unless you have low rear end gears and a stall if you have an auto. Trust me on this.

The only Mustang I'd ever own is a Fender.

A 427 is cheap alternative but you gotta put your heart into a 291 or 292 Fuelie Head to get 2000+ rpm more with the right gearing. It's a lost ART TO DAY and Puppies just don't understand considering they are looking at a Turbo MPEFI 4 Valve DOHC Ricer. The BIG 3 may never catch on the way Grumpy interpret it.

The Fossil Fuel Engine design was about perfected by 1930 and Production Components will always be in the works. I'm a Hypothetical Engineer who lives to build and test theory but unfortunately can not afford or spend time on my passion before I die other then I know what it's like to move at 160+ mph on 4 wheels or 130 mph on 2 - LOL

i know its a 327 that had a 210hp rating but im not sure now with the 2barrell carb and the rusty headers. its a small tranny, only 2 speed. the rearend gears im not sure about but its a 10 bolt. the tires are: P 255 /60S R15.

160+, know just what you mean and it was in my now long gone Crippled Buddy's '58 'Vette ragtop w/ a Z-30 cammed 375hp/327 FI engine, 4-speed and 3.08's w/ his 2.5" dia., pipe nipple dumps open.

It was still pulling at 7,200 rpm that late Sat. night back about the summer of '63!! We went 8 miles in something like 3 minutes w/ me shifting for him under power!

The pup's have no idea what it's like and we NEVER met a car in that three minute, 8 mile ride!! Brand new straight Hwy 63 between Atlanta, and La Plata, MO!!!

He, He, he later got into some trouble and the SHP Interceptors couldn't catch him!!

My Crippled Buddy left the State and after a year, came back and spent a year in the Macon, MO County jail to pay for his trouble!!

I'll bet most of us can recall a story from our youth or a mentor that guided us along in this hobby. I have a million stories. Wanna hear my L88 story??? Yes? Ok. It's 1967. I'm driving around the Puget Sound area looking for 409 parts to put in my 61 Chevy bubble top. I'm directed to a wrecking yard on the Pyallup River Road. The son's owner has some 409 parts from some of his hotrods. (he's a sufer dude, sorta. Nice guy) Turns out he has a 67 Corvette coup that has an L88 in it. And I saw him race it that summer. He ran 'A' stock and was on the national record. (I remember him turning 11.15. Remember, its 1967) Anyway, he asks me if I want to have a ride in his vett. Naw, I like Ramblers I say. He, he. Off we go. But as I got in the car I noticed his tires. White lettered Uniroyals, 7.85X15. We go down a long straightaway on the river road. Then we pull a Uee. He stops, revs and dumps the clutch. It felt good but the tires of the day were overmatched. I don't look forward, only out the back window. Solid smoke. Second gear. Same smoke. Third. Same smoke. Fourth. Same smoke. Running out of road. Shutdown. I look at the speedo. 125. Smoke clearing. 1967. New car. Whew. I bought a 396 (360hp) that winter. The hell with a 409! But to show my gratitude for the ride I bought a $20 409 camshaft from him. I still have it. Memories. Of course that's the reason my car has an L88. Now that I'm racing it maybe, just maybe,,,, nah.

Still a 2-barrel, then probably still a 210hp/327!

And you are just a 300hp/327 topend away from having a 300hp/327 and if you want more add a good old CC 268HE or their 270 Magnum hy-cam and uncork the headers and go!

Probably up to at least 340 hp then if not 360 hp.

Puget Sound, man that's beautiful country.

2 Buddies, one 6'1 and the other 6'3. The 6'1 was pulled over at a road block after a chopper reported a P1800E cruising at 135mph. The Cop said your not driving let the big guy drive. He was passed out drunk in the Psgr seat. How they ever got away without consequences I'll never understand.

With the morning sun breaking over the prairies, I was coming down out of the mountains from Banff and caught up to a RCMP 427 Cruiser loafing at 130 mph. The driver was so busy at the wheel it took his partner 5 minutes before they realized there was a Challenger on their tail. When he loaded the engine to go up Old Man River hill I slapped into 2nd at 122 mph, lit up the G60 15 Comp TA's and was sitting in Calgary before he reached the top. He was then all alone on the HWY that morning - LOL
