New Cam for My 396

I have attempted to search through the threads ... I still need some advice.

I have a 67 SS Chevelle I have owned approx 5 yrs. It is a 396/325 hp. M21 tran, 3:31 rear ... It has a Edelbrock 1904 QJet ... The previous owner says that engine was bored 30 ovef when he had it rebuilt, otherwise, built to stock specifications. Dynomax super turbos on the exhaust.

The good: The car runs like a top and uses no oil ... very reliable

The want: More get up and go ... a little more attitude in the engine

I have an M20 that I may swap the M21 out for. I am leaning towards swapping the cam, but I want to keep the stock exhaust manifolds and heads. I would consider an intake swap. I want some low-end snap.

What would be a good cam that I can upgrade to? Can I do this with just a cam, or, do I need a kit to do lifters, etc.. also ?

I am soliciting suggestions and recommendations. This is purely a street driven vehicle. I want to feel the acceleration, not just imagine it!

Thanks in advance... sdt

Re: New Cam for My 396

Sure, no more than a good old CC 270S solid for grunt or their 282S for more topend b/c you should be right at 10 to 1 CR. so can handle either cam fine.

Want a hy-cam, then, either their 270 or 280 Magnum will do.

Note, nothing fancy at all and it should pick right up. The cam that's in it should be like the little bitty 196/196, 113/???, .398"/.398" lift.

And one other thing is that a cheap set of 1.75" dia., 4-tube, long headers really help here too! As always, jmho..

Re: New Cam for My 396

Heres the sound of a Comp Cams Solid 604 Lift. Part #11-551-1 Grind #280s with Pro Magnum Full Roller Rockers.

This set up should be done as a full ket, with some head work intake carb and ignition. Still looks kinda stock.

I NEED TO HIT THE LOTTERY

Re: New Cam for My 396

I think I have what you want. You have the little L35 engine which is what was in my '68. This is the comp 280H. The link below is a quick fire up for sound. Ignore the idiot in the video. I was jacking on the throttle because the motor was being torn apart. Great all round cam and will work with your stock springs. Might want to change to long slot rockers though. Some on here will say you need to change out your springs, and in a perfect world yes, but I've ran this cam in many BBC's with no problem on stock springs.

Re: New Cam for My 396

Thanks guys ... Hey, those engines sound awsome! Certainly epitomizes what SS 396 means! I will do a little homework now and talk to a builder. Still, I am tempted to try this one myself ... I'll be back ...Thanks again ...
