Q-Jet Idling issue

My Q-Jet seems to be acting up and I am looking for some advice. It is a divorced choke style Q-Jet. Start the car and it high idles for a few minutes once warm it drops down and it idles right at 800 rpms. After I drive the car, could be for a few minutes or an hour the idle takes a long time to come back down when I stop. At a light or stopped it will stay around 1100-1200 rpms for 45-90 seconds before it very slowly comes back down to 800rpms were I set it. Any ideas?

Re: Q-Jet Idling issue

What is your timing doing while the idle is taking 45-90 seconds to drift down to 800 rpm?

Not sure never checked while it is coming down. What are you thinking weights are getting hung up?

You could have weights hanging up or your VA can is not right for the engine.

Another problem could be that it's a Q-jet and not a Holley.

Whole distributor is original so the vacuum can is right. I am going to go check under the cap now and see how everything looks under there and report back. Thanks.

Re: Q-Jet Idling issue

Everything in the dizzy looks good. I lowed the idle while it was running high down to 800 drove the car and it stayed up arounf 1100 again. Checked all the linkage and nothing is getting hung up. Must be a carb issue but what?

Re: Q-Jet Idling issue

When it is idling fast check:
Is the throttle shaft hitting the idle stop properly:
Is the fast idle cam hitting?
Jiggle the linkages to see what might change the idle as a clue to the problem.

Distributor Vs carb problems can be hard to differentiate and both should be checked.

other than that maybe some gunk in the carb , but that will not explain the intermittant changes?
