started engine for first time

This is my 67 camaro project. I am a full-time college student, work part time for my dad's construction company, so my money is real tight. After removing the 6 banger and powerglide, I bought a 350 engine block and lower half of motor off ebay that someone was selling close by for $100.00. I have never built an engine before so I read books, watched video's and asked a lot of questions. I basically bought a lot of used parts off craigslist from nearby communities. I bought parts that you would want to be new like the camshaft, lifters and so on from car shows and swap meets. I started putting the motor together with my dad and his buddies dropping in every now and then. So today, I finally finished the wiring and rigging up things to get it started. So once I figured out how to make the switch hot(forgot about the neutral switch) and got things ready, it started right up. It smoked really bad at first from oil on headers but it runs great. I put the electronic ignition from petronix in the distributor and was really afraid I screwed up but the ignition works great, I have had to do little tweaking. Hearing the motor running after car sitting for 8 months really motivates me to get rest of car finished now.

Congratulations! No better way to learn than asking questions and doing it yourself.

Good job Keith.I looked at your pics. You are a lucky fellow having your dad aside you during the build up.You may find that you feel that torque wrench better pulling then pushing.Just position yourself differently. You will have better control with this tool.

Thanks for the advice, I really had a hard time with the torque wrench at first. The tool used for putting in pistons give me a fit also. I never knew there were so many little tricks to putting together a motor and also how easy it is to mess up by not paying attention to detail. Brantly
