Question Which engine did I get

I just picked up a project car. It's a long story (kind of like the guy getting a old chev and turns out to be a vette) not really that lucky but probably as lucky as I'll ever get. Anyways it has a small block V8 with tuned port induction with finned valve covers with chev emblem and checkered flags on passenger side cover. The person claims it's a vette engine, I don't really believe it is but I'm totally not into the newer stuff so I don't have a clue. What or where should I look to try and identify this engine? I KNOW I SOUND LIKE A MORON FOR BUYING SOMETHING UNKNOWN! But the deal was too good to not make happen. Did a search to make sure wasn't stolen and no leans on it. Just want to identify the engine and then pull it and sell the engine for what it is. Thanks for any help you can give.

Cheers

Re: Which engine did I get

pete,

Please post back the letters that should be at the long VIN number string that should be on the little deck pad that's right above the top pass. side water pump bolt so we can decode what it started out life as IF it isn't still a virgin.

And MAYBE they will be on a small pad thats right above the center of the top of the water pump pulley if it is a newer engine??

The letters decode the type and year vehicle, hp and engine size as well as maybe carb, A/C, A.I.R and Tranny type.

Re: Which engine did I get

Sorry, I guess I forgot to give some details. This is a 1st Gen ('68) that was tucked away under a tarp and the original motor and tranny has been switched out for this new 80's or 90's style fuel injected engine (tuned port induction is on the top of the motor) plus it has a 700R4. I just don't know were to look for #'s and or anything special to identify the motor.

Passenger side front block deck, behind the alternator, if installed on pass side. It will have VIN number and engine code.

Engine block casting number is on the bellhousing flange driver side.

Re: Which engine did I get

If it's a Vette motor it will have 113 aluminum heads. If it's a Camaro/Firebird TPI it will have 083 steel heads (or 081 if it's a 305).

Re: Which engine did I get

Well, what a bugger to find numbers on that baby, drivers side top of bell housing has
CFD GM 5.7 L G and then on passenger side bell housing has 14088548
I still can't find any numbers on the front but will keep looking. So I assume it's a 350 the heads look to be steel but I'll try for more numbers. Thanks again for the help.
