anyone taken a 454 and made it look 396?

Have anyone of you taken a 454 and made it look like an old school 396?
Pictures?

If you want to make your car look "slow" put painted valve covers on it. Most people have either chrome or aluminum ones, but I like the orange colored drippers as a no-nonsense approach. Factory pulleys and brackets, too. It fits in the category of "speak softly and carry a big stick."

Re: anyone taken a 454 and made it look 396?

a 454 already looks exactly like a 396 except for the harmonic balancer- and you gotta know what to look for and look really close to see that. just put all the 396 accessories on it and call it a 396 if anyone asks what it is.

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

If you want to use a 396 balancer, you can add "heavy metal" to your 454 crank to balance it internally.
I believe the name for this metal is Mallory Metal

What exactly is it you're trying to do ? They already look the same externally as the others have said.

I'm trying to get my 250 inline to look like a 572 but I'm not having too much luck!

Here is my 454 block with 427 guts. Im going to yank it out in a couple of weeks and stroke it to a 496 and have it still look like this.

About 13" down your top radiator hose, from the thermostat side, I think I see a speck of dust Skip!!!!!

That is one nice engine compartment!

Is that an old Performer 2.0??

Re: anyone taken a 454 and made it look 396?

I did basically the same as Skip for a friend's '69 SS 396 Chevelle. I used a .030 over 454 which makes 461 cubes. I used the same stock type chrome valve covers and with some double thick gaskets managed to fit a set of roller rocker arms underneath. From the outside it looks like a 375 hp 396. It also has a roller hydraulic cam which sounds a lot like the old solid lifter cam. Unless you start looking closely at the numbers nobody knows the difference.
Skip's Turbo Jet 425 HP sticker is a dead giveaway.

Those runners are huge. All I know it that I'm running one on my 454 in my truck and it's a freaking torque monster.

If I had a BBC I would tag it 396 no matter what size the engine is.
I go with the sleeper attitude & looks. I am just that way.
