Re: cam & heads

I think you're good to go as you are for Pump Gas. I suspect your cam is a Hydraulic FT. Yes you can get another 1000 rpm with a Mill on the Heads to up the Static Compression to say 11:1 and run either a Mechanical FT or Solid Roller Cam; BUT, your LOW END will Suffer on the Street and in my opinion NOT worth the tare down and $1500 for a SR or I might agree to $200 mechanical FT with a slightly longer duration and lift. As for as Valve size the 1.94's/1.55 are sufficient, if that's what you have. You don't need 2.02/1.6's until over 6500 rpm.

If anything I would swap out that 300-38 street domnator intake manifold for an Eldelbrock Dual Plane RPM and run a Holley 650 Dp if your tranny is manual or a vacuum 650 Holley if the tranny is auto , a 750 Dp if you plan hitting 7000+rpm and the Crank, Rods and Pistons are forged in which case the Single Plane would benefit with a bigger cam and then consider spending more bucks for the 2.02/1.6's and Machinists Shop Time. Then again your Street Performance will suffer ;o)

I run a 454 like a 302 and don't consider 1/4 times - so what's a Z28 all about if you can't shift to 2nd with a M21 or 2 at 65 mph. Sh*t a 68 Volvo B20 could do it at 80mph with 3.90 gears - you might not have a clutch left, if you do it on asphalt, but what the H*ll - LOL

There is nothing like shifting into any gear including 2nd while cursing on the freeway and anticipate on how to over take your prey with the engine humming, whether it is a 302 or a 572.

Re: cam & heads

Other then changing out the Intake to an Edelbrock Dual Pane RPM and Holley 650 vacuum, as you're running an Auto-Tanny, you're good to go, without a cam change, in my opinion ;o)

Re: cam & heads

In a Hot Rod magazine cam comparo a 350 RHS 8.8cr motor with S/R heads and with a Comp 275 DEH 219-229 .468-.488 lift, 110 lsa cam and a 750 DP made 330 hp at 5000 rpm and 390 lbs. of torq. at 3500. They also tried a Comp 282S solid lifter cam-236-236 .495 gross lift 110 lsa lashed at .024 and it made almost identical hp and tq figures from low end to top end. Your cam would be comparable to the 275 DEH cam in my opinion.

Re: cam & heads

gee i would'nt think i would run that fast w/only 330 H.P,i can give up some tork since it's only 3000 p.d.s. been thinking about getting a cam in the 240- 242 dur, little over 500 lift and still have enough bottom end tork.

Re: cam & heads

If you left your cam in there an put some bigger heads on it you could get up around 380 or more hp. Another Hot Rod cam article on a 350 at 9.7 cr with AFR 190 heads made 380 hp at 5400 and 400 #tq. at 4100 with the little 218 duration Comp 268HE cam. The 280 Comp cam made 405 hp at 5700 and 404 lb. ft. [email protected] 4300. Vacuum was 12.5 inches at 850 rpm. If you want a bigger cam without changing heads I think you will not be very happy with the results. If you want a different cam try one on a 108 lsa for more low and midrange punch like an Isky 270 mega cam or Crane 274H06 on a 106 lsa.
