BBC vs SBC weight

Anybody know what an all aluminum bbc with forged crank and rods weighs? Also, how about the weight of a steel block/aluminum headed sbc?

Re: BBC vs SBC weight

Well a stock small block weighs about 575 lbs and an iron headed big block weighs in at about 685 lbs. Big block aluminum heads drop the weight about 75 lbs, and an all aluminum big block weighs about the same as a small block (575 lbs). I imagine aluminum heads for a small block would drop about 50 lbs, but thats just a guess, while the big block figures are verified.

Sometimes it's better to let someone think your an idiot, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt...

Re: BBC vs SBC weight

I'm not so sure about some of those big block numbers:

Cast iron BBC-685
w/aluminum heads-610
all aluminum BBC-550

The all aluminum BBC is only 60 lbs lighter than an alumium head cast iron BBC?

GM performance Parts lists a production 502 bare block at 269 lbs, while the new ZL1 block is listed at 110 lbs.....a difference of 150 lbs or so if we consider a standard MKIV block to be slightly lighter.

Re: BBC vs SBC weight

Yeah, I kind of thought that one was a little fishy. Got the info off another site somewhere. But I think the numbers on everything else is close.

I may be old and slow, but ........what the heck was I gonna say?
