Decided on an engine today

Went and talked to the guy that used to build my circle track engines today and ended up buying an engine he had just built for another guy who decided he could no longer afford to race any more. It was built to go in a mud truck, the kind that drag races thru 130' of muck. It's an all steel 496, carb to oil pan. Heads are 6272292, block is 3999289. It has Moroso valve covers and oil pan, BG Demon 850 carb, roller tip rockers, Weiand dual plane intake, hydraulic cam in the 510-520 lift range, and an MSD HEI Distributor. He fired up an identical motor sitting outside in another truck with full exhaust and I was surprised how lopey it sounded. He told me he would put a more radical cam in mine if that's what I wanted. I told him sometime down the road I would probably go hydraulic roller cam, AFR heads, and a single plane intake. I think for now the present combo will get my old Camaro down the road pretty well.

Re: Decided on an engine today

Jeff..did you mean to say you will swap out the present low lift flat tappet hydraulic for a roller hydraulic with more lift down the road?If you are thinking AFR,s and a single plane..she,s solid roller all the way in a bbc.Think train weight here over 6k.
Anyhoo..congrats.

Re: Decided on an engine today

I think I did well considering I get my 400 tranny gone thru for free also, by the guy who had the engine built (he owns a tranny shop). I'll have the engine paid off in a couple weeks, then we'll put it on the run-in stand and break it in at the buiders shop. I'm almost embarrassed to admit I'm paying $4200 for everything, but his loss is my gain.

Yes, somewhere down the road I'll go to a higher lift roller setup.

Re: Decided on an engine today

Please consider getting this little solid lifter cam from UDHarold!

278/249/161, 110/106, .618" lift and it need's .018" lash on both sides!

It's in my bedroom closet now and once i fire up my mild 496 w/ a new CC 282S in it, it's going in!!!

And compare it to CC's great old 288AR solid street roller!

Just kidding on the Mutha Thumpr. I don't wanna go solid roller or solid flat tappet. A bigger hydraulic flat tappet or roller is all I need. This is'nt going to be a drag car, may not ever see the track at all. Hell, I just got out of circle track racing after doing it for 17 years, I certainly don't wanna catch the straight line bug! I do want a cam that has good street manners, sounds fairly baddass at idle, and tans the hides whenever I stomp down on the go pedal.......

I may be old and slow, but ........what the heck was I gonna say?
