454 4 bolt block

This block is a mid 80's crate motor. $350 is the asking price. The price is right, but I'm wondering If this is a good block? Is it heavy duty compared to the 70's blocks?

Re: 454 4 bolt block

That's a good price....The very early 1970's blocks had a higher nickel content and are more desirable but a late 1970's to mid 1980's block will do just fine. If there are no cracks and you are getting the complete engine, it's a steal at that price and I would buy it! All the 1970 stuff will fit on there as that is still considered part of the Mark IV big block family...Stay away from the 454's from about 1991 - up referred to Gen V blocks....Gen VI was affectionately known as Gen Fix due to the issues with the early to mid 1990's blocks...If I recall correctly Gen V would not allow for a mechanical fuel pump or mechanical clutch linkage.

That's a deal, snag it if it's in good shape.
I agree, leave the Gen V's alone, they're a pain. The Gen VI's are much improved, plus you get to run OEM hydraulic roller lifters.
