big block exhaust manifold 69 camaro

I have a 69 camaro 4speed that i put a 454 into it, I had headers and they hung up on the power steering box so i purchased cast iron exhaust manifolds for it. I used an engine lift to jack the engine up in order to get the left side on which i was able to instal but they still hang up on the steering box and than i can't get the engine mount to line up, I am about to give up what am i doing wrong. Suggestions please, Thank you

Re: big block exhaust manifold 69 camaro

You'll need to install frame mounts for a big block, which will offset the motor.

X2 it will kick the driver side up and over just a bit... If you had a small block in it before then chance are you have the small block frame mounts.. Big block frame mounts very noticeable because the driver side is shorter then the passenger side.

Are you talking about the motor mounts or the metal frame mounts. The metal frame mounts are what bolts to the frame and the motor mounts bolt to the motor and then sets in to the frame mounts with a large bolt and nut to bolt together.

Did you chance your transmission crossmember to a big block crossmember also ? It must also be changed to match the offset of the engine. Do you have the correct exhaust manifolds ?

Re: big block exhaust manifold 69 camaro

The incorrect exhaust manifolds for pass cars/trucks will point downward at the oil pan and may hit the steering box, instead of pointing more outward towards the fender like the correct ones. I just went thru the same issue (except I didn't install due to finding out it could be an issue, but will try tonight to see if same results occur). I got the correct ones and will hang them too tonight to see the difference.

See my blog from 2 weeks ago in this engine section regarding BB manifolds

Re: big block exhaust manifold 69 camaro

I used my stock 350SS's cross member by just kicking my M-20's tailhousing over and then installing a 3-hole poly tranny mount using one bolt in the center hole in the mount and through the pass. side cross member hole fine!

My stock Muncie shifter works fine too!

Re: big block exhaust manifold 69 camaro

these are new manifolds bought from DR classics for BB engine left side manifold number is 3909879/ LH1. I did not change the crossmember on this car, it was a small block, it has a four speed transmision also. Please let me know on how your project goes and want you did to get them on. Thank you
