Distributor too big??

I put my fresh 396 in and got it all ready to break in,went to put in the distributor and had to jack up the trans cross member to get it to clear firewall, this is a HEI dist. by the way,Do I have to cut out firewall ? move engine foreward? Is ther a taller trans mount I could use? Shims? Any ideas? Thanks,Ed

Change to a smaller distributor. Better than banging in the firewall.

Re: Distributor too big??

First off, what did you have in there before? Second are all your body bushings and motor mounts in good condition? If you have the coil-in-cap large HEI dist., go with the smaller cap HEI dist. that are available. Unless you are a body man and can reconfigure your firewall don't dent it up. I went with the large cap HEI and had to dent my firewall. I have a SB 350. I did some searches later and even though some say using different engine and motor mounts, I'm still not convinced it would work. Anytime you change onething, it may change something else down the line. Do as becool suggested.

Re: Distributor too big??

Some of us have (and swear by) a points distributor converted to HEI by Dave Ray ( www.davessmallbodyheis.com ). Many others are running the MSD 8360 ready to run dist. Still others have converted their own points dist to HEI using a kit from Pertronix or Crane.

I measured my 69 (396 with correct 69 BB mounts and stands), and it was just a little too close to fit the coil in cap style GM HEI. I spent less than $200 to have Dave Ray convert mine, and it's like a work of art (he polishes the housing, puts it on a distributor machine and curves it for your motor's specs, etc.).

Re: Distributor too big??

The msd ready to run is a great choice...solid mounts give you more height!!

Re: Distributor too big??

I've seen one where I had to jack up the trans to get it in, but once it was in there, I could set the trans back down and all would (just) clear.

Re: Distributor too big??

There are 2 diffent height trans mounts ..about 12 mm dif or can mak a spacer out of a bit of 12mm scrape plate with longer mounting bolts
Check the fan clearance on the inside of the shroud at the bottom.

My Spelling is not incorrect...it is creative

Re: Distributor too big??

I just put a 454 in my 67 that had a 327. I used the proper big block frame stands. They shift the engine slightly forward. I had plenty of room for the HEI distributor.
