Air Cleaner Housing and performance?

I have a question about using an original air cleaner housing vs. an after market open one. Many of the cars I see don't use the original housing, the one with the black snorkel looking tube or whatever, they seem to use the one where you see the open filter all the way around. Is there a specific reason for this? Performance?

I was thinking of putting an original back on, and was wondering if there would be any changes in how it runs.
