Starter issue

Is it possible for a starter to crank and spin on the bench fine and then when its installed have it act up. Well I know it is as thats what its doing. The solinoid sounds as if its trying to engauge and possibly some gears are stripped inside or the solinoid is fluttering on and off. The motor tries to rotate but it just kind of inches along.

Any ideas.??.. This is not in my camaro but rather a jet boat with a 350 olds.. and it takes about 3 hours just to get the started out or in..

Battery good and I changed the Ig. switch

I think ill see if I can short it out between the bat pole and Ig pole to make sure the rest of the system is fine. Does that matter what gauge wire i use... its going t be a struggle to gt to..

Re: Starter issue

Starter drive stripped out, they have a one way clutch to allow the flywheel to over
run the starter.
