mixing oils

Hi,

Is it ok to put 4w40 semi-synthetic engine oil in an engine which has 5w30 semi-synthetic oil in it? Problem is I have some cans of 4w40 left but there is 5w30 in the car. Car is a '67 Camaro 454 cui.

best regards, Joeri

Re: mixing oils

Go ahead they are both Semi-Synthetic Oils, if anything, I consider the 4w 40 more suited for a 454. I personally use ESSO 3D Extra CI-4 Plus 15w 40 Dino with 1500ppm ZDDP in my SR cammed 454.

Re: mixing oils

go ahead and mix them. Net effect is the 40 will merge with the 30 and balance out like a 35 (which doesnt exist) but no problem. At normal engine temp. the oil will reach its higher number, viscosity. They it stays at that as long as its clean. When its cooled down, it then acts like the 4 or 5w for a short time as it warms up. Then its back to 30, or 40
