Pulsing fuel pressure gauge??

I just installed a pressure gauge in the fuel line to my carb and it pulses so much I have no idea what my pressure is. Is this normal for a $20 gauge on a mechanical pump or is the guage bad...or the pump defective??? Or do I need to buy a better gauge?
Thanks
Steve

Re: Pulsing fuel pressure gauge??

I had a gauge that was pulsing went down to 3lbs pressure, i then replaced it with a Holley gauge and its all good now. My guess is the gauge is bad.

Dose it do this when its hot or cold. If it only dose it when its hot the do a test with an ice pack, put it under the gauge to see if it getting heat soaked.

Re: Pulsing fuel pressure gauge??

It's a new guage but probably not a good enough one to dampen the pulses from the mech pump. I guess you really do get what you pay for.
Thanks for the comments.

Try the Holley gauge.

Re: Pulsing fuel pressure gauge??

A mate bought a cheapy gauge and had all sorts of fuel pressure problems.

Strangely, they all disappeared when the gauge was replaced with a real one.

Re: Pulsing fuel pressure gauge??

I use a summit fuel pressure gauge and it pulsed like crazy between 7-9psi with my Holley mech fuel pump. I thought it was pretty weird at first but didn't think much about it at the time. However, I just switched to an edelbrock mech fuel pump and that same gauge is now rock solid at 6psi. For me, the pump was the difference. I only switched because I am running an edelbrock carb that requires <=6psi.

Re: Pulsing fuel pressure gauge??

I replaced my summitt gauge with an oil filled Marshall and the problem was cured. Thanks all for the input.

Re: Pulsing fuel pressure gauge??

The Summit gauges are obviously crap!
