MSD Distributor 8360 Won't Fit in my 68

Hello Guys,

I was trying to replace my Mallory Unilite Distributor with this MSD 8360 with Vacuum Advance.

I've measured the shaft and both come in at 1.25" For some reason the MSD gets caught and won't go in.

Another thing to note is the distributor of the MSD is much larger than the unilite which might effect how it lines up. I mean it's very close to the firewall. ANyone else experience this? Tips? Looks like I'll have to return it.

This is on a 327

Danny

How much further does it need to go to seat?
If its like a 1/4 inch, it needs to mate with the oil pump drive shaft.

It works and fits perfectly on my 68.

Is it not aligning with the oil pump in the hole? Did you try bumping your engine over and seeing if it drops in? (FIRST remove coil wire of course)...

Or you can use a long flathead screwdriver to turn the oil pump shaft and align it with the bottom of the distributor...

Sometimes they take some wiggling.

Brent, It's actually not going in far enough to even hit the oil shaft. It appears to be hitting the entry into the block. SO basically it goes in about 2 inches then get stuck.

How much room do you have between your distributor and the firewall on your 68? I barely have any room. I almost wonder if my 327 is further back than most.

Your intake manifold could be shifted a bit-all mallory dist's I've seen( only about 3) all kinda fit loose
All the msd's(over a dozen) I've worked with tend to be snug

yellow - i thought about that as well and that could be the case. It's just that I measured both shafts of the mallory + MSD and it's the same.

I might just have to go with a mallory vacuum one now and return the MSD. The MSD distributor is a lot bigger and because of that doesn't look like i have much room to rotate the distributor to set advance.

I called MSD tech support and the guy was a bit shocked to hear that an 8360 isn't fitting in a chevy. I guess i'm "special".

I put an hei with coil in the cap in my 68 with a 327 had to slightly modify my firewall, the distributer was hitting just enough to keep it from being adjusted.

Okay so I actually took off my intake manifold (needed to change the gasket anyway). Put the 8360 in and it won't fit. The reason seems to be because the distributor is physically touching my firewall. Just an update. Thanks for the responses guys.

I do wonder why the clearance is so tight though.

Looks like 68basecoupes problem is similar to mine.

Danny,I bent my firewall with a mallet to make it fit,the dent cant be seen once the distributer is in.Good luck.
