Carnage

I just figured I would put these pics out there.I actually happened to me over 2 years ago.I put this engine together back in about 1999 and ran about 600 passes with it about 50 of them were with a 250 shot of nitrous, and did nothing to it but change the oil and swap the valve springs,so the engine didnt owe me a dime.It looks like it stacked a rod bearing and stuck to the crank and broke both rods on that throw.I duplicated this shortblock for my current engine.

This is exactly what I found when I pulled the head

The oil pan was smashed down to the engine cradle and the rails had to be bent back to get the bolts out.I needed to pull the pan because I actually reused 6 pistons out of this mess.

This is why you file fit piston rings, this engine came apart at the end of a run at about 200 degrees{normal temp for this engine} the pistom hitting the head captured the ring at it's hot clearance, and this engine was actually worn out and tired. Not much room for error here huh?

I got away easy on the heads,16 new valves and a fresh valve job.

I just figured it made for interesting conversation

Re: Carnage

Is that pieces of the cam I see in the piston bore? That had to be a loud *** bang when it let go??? The oil pan looks shreaded. Did anything come through the firewall or floorboard?

Re: Carnage

It didnt make a sound when it let go,actually the engine got strangly quiet. It was good all the way down the track,I lifted off the gas and it just went silent,no combustion, cam stopped turning, just looked in the rear view mirror and saw a 2 foot wide swath of oil down the track. It was a track rental, the guys who I was with said it took 2 hours to clean up.I loaded it into the trailer and left.

Yup that is chunks of the cam on top of the piston. The rods shattered the flat tappet cam into 4 pieces, lifters fell into the pan, timing chain broke.1 pushrod fell into the pan.I had the headers opened up that day and the car was eardrum piercing loud at 7500 rpm so I didnt hear a bang.I actually laughed when this happened,I couldnt believe that it took this long.I put the vacum pump on the engine back then because the rings were so worn it was blowing the breathers right off the valve covers but the engine was going it's fastest ever.

Re: Carnage

Looks like one of our old circle track engines. You don't save much when they let go at 7500 rpms.
