tuning my 383 where to begin??

383 I believe just under 10:1
AFR 195 Eliminators
Airgap manifold
Holley 750 DP, no choke, or vaccum
MSD 6AL2
MSD Distributor I believe setup with med and heavy spring for moderate curve

CC gold rockers 1:6
Shorty plugs gapped at 035
Mechanical fuel pump

I have never tried to tune a car in the last 20yrs. This car has not moved in 15.
I know I need to time the car, I have an advance light.
How to set up the carb? Jets? A/F mixture ect.

I have cruise very easily around the neignborhood for about 3 miles...mainly making sure the brakes work, no leaks ect.

Now I need to tune the motor....where do I begin?

68 project...reassembly starting: (383, AFR 195, Air Gap, Comp Cam XR276HR, 1.6 CC Gold rollers, Holley 750, 4/09) (TKO 600 conversion from T350 4/09) (floor pan restored 6/09). (12 bolt 3.73, Wilwood disc, Hotchkis TVS 7/09), Dougs 368 with Big Dog mufflers (9/09), 383 fired up 9/30/09, Candy Apple Red 2012 with white RallyBee stripe

Does it bog?fart?belch? or melt rubber on command?
What is lacking?
sounds like a decent build-they tend to not need alot of fussin around
start with about 16(or more as needed) initial and try for a total around 34(black bushing and a heavy & medium spring should be perfect) give it another 12-14 or so vac and drive it
holley hp?they tend to run fat in high vacuum motors(like yours should be)
You may end up diggin around in the idle circut-not a big deal-leave it stock for now,drive it a bit and check the plugs
Should be a torque monster

good gas is a must!
might need a carb rebuild too.
specially if it been sitting that long.
full tuneup wouldnt hurt.
also change all the fluids etc.

I guess I was not clear
Brand new motor....5yr restoration project

When warm, idles about 1k
If I rev at idle to lets say 3k and let off gas will cough a little and quit

When driving the little bit I have I feel like it wants to take off...
Alot of condensation out of the pipes initially. Smells like it runs rich.

wow Rick, sounds like you are nearly done !

From our previous messages I think you have a 4150 double pumper (#4779C) like I do so here's what I did on my new motor. Motor needs to be fully warm to start with.

1. set base idle speed (800-850rpm is a good start)
2. set the timing with vacuum advanced plugged (8-10deg)
3. adjust both floats
4. adjust mixture using vacuum gauge (use 20 in.HG as starting point)
5. reattach vacuum advance and check timing at 1500 & 2000 rpm
6. go for a ride

From here I made a few minor tweaks in 1/8 turns to the mixture till I was happy.

Ps. took my first 65 m ile drive on Saturday. What a rocket ship.
