400 SBC external balancing

A question for you 400 guys. In my search for a set of IF wheels for my 69, which I found, I have run into 3 400 SBC engines. 2 are , I believe, 511 blocks with 4speeds in mid 70's gmc 2500 series pu and 1 is 509 block that was pulled running from I believe he said a 72 caprice. How much envolvement does the harmonic balancer and/or flywheel have to do with the external balancing?

Can I use either of the motors and just put my flywheel clutch/pp on them or is original flexsplate/flywheel part of the external balancing. How about the original harmonic balancers.

I need to keep this a resonable built as I am semi retired and take home about a grand a month less than I did few months ago. But I'm loving it. I have a life again and a revived interest in finishing my dream for my car. I need to get a 5 speed in it. That will probably come before the motor but I,ve got an engine stand and can store the engine till next year.Just trying to get a few ducks in a row before buying one of these engines. Thanks Jim In Cheyenne.

Re: 400 SBC external balancing

you need an external balanced flywheel and harmonic balancer - that's the balancing on the engine.

Re: 400 SBC external balancing

you have two options, using the balancer and flywheel/flexplate from the 400 engine, or buying a new internally balanced 400 crank and using your parts.

As Steve suggests, each and every 400 CID needs it's own counterweighted harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate for correct balance.

You can put your neutral balanced PP and clutch onto the 400 flywheel.

Re: 400 SBC external balancing

Thanks, guys...that's exactly what I was looking for. I'd like to keep my clutch/pp as it LUK unit with only about a 1000 miles on it.

Re: 400 SBC external balancing

The 509 casting is stronger than the 511 even though the 511 is a 4-bolt main & a 509 is a 2-bolt main. Most engine builders like John Lingenfelter in his book recommends the 2-bolt 509 casting.
