I am installing a GM 350 290hp crate motor and took the pump pickup off to install the pump pickup for my 8 inch oil pan. The pickup tube for the deep pan is smaller than the tube that came off the crate motor? Are there several size tubes in use? It looks like the oil pumps are exactly the same but for the crate motor has a bigger hole for the pickup. I see on Summit where they have .625 tubes aned .750 tubes. Is that the difference?
The section of the pump that the pick up presses into looks exactly the same but for the hole and screws in the same to the main body of the oil pump. Can I just change those sections out instead of getting a new pump?
I would not do that. Different manufacturers may use slightly different covers and it could be a problem. Small Block oil pumps are just too cheap to take a chance. You can buy a M55 Melling almost anywhere for $30 or less.
