How do you know if you need to shim a starter?

I'm putting a 302 in my 69. I've never had to shim a starter before and I'm not sure how to determine if it needs to be shimmed. Thanks very much!

Re: How do you know if you need to shim a starter?

the pinion to flywheel should be about .100 inch away, and u need a wire gauge of .04 between the pinion of the starter and your fly wheel, shim accordingly to meet these specs

Start without shims, MOST do not need shims, if it does it will let you know as it will sound odd when cranking.
