383 build

I am looking at building a new engine for my 68 and the 383 seems to be what I am looking for. However I have never built an engine before, but now seems like a good time to start. I called and talked to a builder here in town and he gave me a cost of 2300 to do all machining and assemple the short block, if I provide the block. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about but I like to do things myself, is me building this engine myself a good idea? Is a 383 any more difficult than any other?

Re: 383 build

I think building the 383 is no different then any other engine but there is some clearancing that has to be done if its stroked. It also depends on the block. Just make sure you research people with good reputations if you have someone else build it. I asked around when I had mine built and everyone said the guy that was building it was an expert at building sbc's but mine has not run right since it was built. I kept bringing the car back to make him fix it but in return he kept breaking other parts and costing me more money.

If you have the time, tools and know how, I vote for building it yourself.
