Fuel pump question ?

Good afternoon My 16 year old son and I are re-building a1989 Iroc Z. The car had been sitting for about 5 years so we decided to take the fuel tank out to clean it and its a good thing we did because the piece of hose that connects the pump to the fuel tubing had completely rotted and the pump was hanging by the wire. We have not decided what motor we will be using so I don't know what to do about the stock fuel pump,re-use it ,put a bigger one in,put an in-line fuel pump ? The counter guy at my local Auto Zone said to leave the stock fuel pump in (not wired ) and put an in-line pump in and it would be able to pull thru the stock pump. Does this sound right ? Once the tank goes back in I don't want to have to take it out again. Thanks

Re: Fuel pump question ?

For stock applications , stock pump, if you will be racing this , may want to relook the issue. Might want to inspect the wiring harness for frayed wires also., Might add for an orginal pump this old, I would go for a new one.
