Painting a rebuilt engine: Rattle can?

I am suppose to pick up my engine from the rebuilder on Monday and he asked me if I want it painted before I pick it up. I asked him how they do it and they said they rattle can primer and chevy orange on top. He offered to mask it off and send me home a few cans if I want to do it myself. I already bought a can of the eastwood engine paint but now I'm not sure what to do... My garage is quite cold so it would be nice to have it painted but most importantly I want to make sure it's done right.

A few other questions...
1. Will a rattle can job from the engine builder last?
2. If I used my eastwood product can I do it with a foam brush and does it need primer first?

Re: Painting a rebuilt engine: Rattle can?

1 - How many hours is he charging you to Paint the Engine?

2- Does this include absolute cleaning with Lacquer Thinner?
(I absolute Clean, Sand Blast and absolute Clean again before any paint)

3 - Is he using Epoxy Primer and allowing it to cure for 4 days?

4 - As long as the Product is formulated for Engine application, is he applying at least 3 coats?
(I prefer the local Canadian Tire Ceramic Enamel Engine Paint.)

Re: Painting a rebuilt engine: Rattle can?

1. I wouldn't be charged for the paint. Since I brought the engine in totally cleaned up he said he would paint it for free.
2. The engine is already down to bare metal...
3. I have no idea on the type of primer or the type of paint.
(Thanks for the Canadian Tire bit... I spend way to much money there!)

Re: Painting a rebuilt engine: Rattle can?

rattle can doesnt last long at all.
the last motor I painted i used POR engine paint.
its self leveling and even brushable.
2 years now and my engine still looks like the day i painted it.

I also used POR chevy orange on my intake and the front face of the engine when I had the front end apart. Its so easy to use, (lots of fresh air, its dangerous) brush on with disposable foam brushes. Prep is the key with their marine clean and Metal Etching products.

I used Imron after a coat of etch primer. Shine is still there.
