L-65 horsepower

Now that I found out my 350 in my 67 RS Conv is a 1972 L-65 that originally had 165hp, would adding a 4 barrel carb and headers significantly increase the horse power?

Re: L-65 horsepower

If it still has the factory 2 barrel carb and intake those things were pretty small.

A performer intake and a quadrajet 750 cfm with 1 5/8 headers with a good exhaust will probably pick ya up 30-45 HP. IMO of course.

Re: L-65 horsepower

Good idea and while you are at it I would think about putting in a little bigger cam like a Comp 268, Isky 264 Mega cam, or Energizer 272 cam for even more power.

Re: L-65 horsepower

Here is a pretty good two-part article on what you can do with bolt-ons. They started with a pretty much factory two barrel 350 and show the gains after each addition. They went from 229hp/350lbft to 278hp/385lbft with the addition of headers, iron four barrel intake, and Q-jet. Headers alone weren't worth much until they added the four barrel. Eventually they wound up north of 500hp with just bolt on stuff....roller cam, AFR heads, etc.

Re: L-65 horsepower

A set of heads with smaller cc chambers would get you more compression without having the run premium gas as long as you don't too small on the cc's.

By '72 GM had pretty much sucked the life out of any performance hopes due smog rules.
Compression was one of the first things to go.

Re: L-65 horsepower

Better heads will feel like you added a blower.
The mild bolt ons will work, but it will still not be exciting.
been there, done that.
You can find a decent set of heads for a good price.

Re: L-65 horsepower

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I have lots to learn and do to get this engine some horses, which is one of the reasons I bought the car.

Re: L-65 horsepower

A set of 3.42 or 3.73 gears will wake your car up too!!
