383 was balance with fly wheel and balancer what to replace with new balancer.Motor out of car right now on stand what can I use.Do i have to have it rebalanced?Trying not to pull it a part.Just and old 400 balancer would like a new.Not a race car but I do get on it and dont want to hurt the motor with a cheap one.Do they make a 0 balance one that I can add and be done with it.

Re: 383 Needs harmonic balancer witch one

Fred, if you motor was balanced with this kit, it has to stay with the motor. I have never heard anyone swapping out later with a differant balancer. Might want to look at the balancer to see if any weight was taken out of it. My thinking is this was a kit? If its not a race car, dont see what the matching balancer would hurt. Maybe someone esle will chime in here.

Only if the 383 was internally-balanced with zero-balanced flywheel and balancer when it was built.

Re: 383 Needs harmonic balancer witch one

You need to know if internally or externally balnced, but since you say "just an old 400 balancer" I would guess external. If the balancer was not modified when the motor was balanced you can just get another balancer for either a 400 or one thats 0 balanced for internally balanced assembly. Usually shops won't remove metal from the balancer during balancing, but you want to be sure.
If you can figure out what you have Pioneer makes a real nice replacement balancer, affordable too.

Re: 383 Needs harmonic balancer witch one

Look on the back side of your current balancer to see if it has a weight on it or and/or some holes drilled in it. If the weight is there it's an external balance. You should be able to purchase another one and take both to a competent shop where they can match the new one up with the old one.
